The answer was a) a spaniel named Daniel. Specifically, the character is described as a "carefully trained...real smart dog named Daniel...our country's first gun-toting spaniel." And as "Daniel, the Kick-a-Poo Spaniel." Yes, I read my child a book with the word gun it in. What's a blog without a little controversy? :)
